In the EU, more than 3,000 medical accelerators are in use for RT, and in
Germany, more than 250,000 patients receive RT as part of their cancer treatment each year.
The demands on performance of advanced linear accelerator based facilities strongly depend on the quality of the particle beams produced by such machines. Indeed, state-of-the-art applications in photon production and high-energy physics colliders require to use very high brightness electron beams, implying the coexistence of high peak currents and small transverse emittances. In such systems, the nominal phase-space density may be diluted by the presence of self-induced electromagnetic fields, causing interaction among charged particles through space charge forces and the excitation of wakefields. The two sources of collective effects may both be present in significant levels, and be coupled by the strong externally applied transverse and longitudinal fields present in modern high gradient linear accelerators. Thus, beam dynamics studies investigating all relevant effects, applied and collective, are necessary to predict the operational limitations of a given instrument.

A prerequisite for systematically investigating the
biological effects of uHDR is a sound understanding and control of the challenging short-pulse
dynamics for ions, electrons, and photons. Short pulses and variable repetition rates down to
micro-beams and micro-structures in the GHz and THz range have to be delivered reliably and
reproducibly. This module deals with the experimental and theoretical prerequisites (non-
equilibrium beam physics, instrumentation, control). H
how are electric fields considered in beam matter interaction, read something about influence of external magnetic field what with influence of the self-generated electromagnetic field surrounding the bunch/pulse → maybe better in motivation…

new accelerator types (e.g. laser-based ones for higher energies) bring also different beam

All the above is planned to serve as a foundation for a new Cluster of Excellence called AccelerateRT, aiming for basic research towards a more effective, efficient and widely available radiotherapy by focusing on tailored compact accelerators, corresponding beam control, dosimetry and visualization and the resulting bio-medical effects of novel radiotherapy qualities.
(We plan to build the scientific foundations of a new generation of
radiotherapy with the goal to substantially improve cancer cure rates. Our long-term vision is
to translate this basic research into more effective, efficient and widely available radiotherapy.
The basic research in AccelerateRT will focus on three major areas: (A) tailored compact
accelerators, (B) beam control, dosimetry and visualization of irradiation efficacy, and
(C) exploration of bio-medical effects and optimization of novel radiotherapy qualities. )
